Russel Nimmo interpretive sign for Etheridge Shire Council
The Nimmo family were deeply involved in local racing, and were well represented in the Lyndhurst Amateur Picnic Race over the years. Russel, a champion jockey, rode many “Oak Park” winners to victory. The Lyndhurst Amateur Picnic Race Club was formed in 1904 on the adjacent "Lyndhurst Station.” Years later, after race meetings interfered with station activity, the Nimmo family offered a parcel of land to the local race committee beside the Copperfield River, several kilometres upstream of the "Oak Park" homestead. The area was designated as a sports reserve and the Oak Park Picnic Race Club operates on this site to the present day.
Russel Nimmo was a valued member of the Etheridge Shire Council for 27 years, from 1927 until 1954. When Council opened a new bridge over the Copperfield River near the original Oak park Station, they decided to honor the bridge with Russel Nimmo's name. We were asked to create an interpretive sign in materials appropriate to the harsh environment to inform the community of this interesting piece of local history.
